Everything you need to know about the 2017 Cannes Film Festival

In just two days the picturesque seaside city of Cannes on the French Riviera will become the gathering place of celebrities and film industry.

The 70th annual Cannes Film Festival is scheduled to be held from 17th to 28th May 2017.

Spanish film director and screenwriter Pedro Almodóvar has been selected as the President of the Jury for the festival with Italian actress Monica Bellucci hosting the opening and closing ceremonies. The film “Ismael’s Ghosts” directed by French director Arnaud Desplechin, has been selected as the opening film for the festival.

This year the festival will be celebrating its 70th anniversary. In late March 2017, official poster of the festival was revealed featuring Italian actress Claudia Cardinale.

The actress stated: “‘I am honoured and proud to be flying the flag for the 70th Festival de Cannes, and delighted with this choice of photo. It’s the image I myself have of the Festival, of an event that illuminates everything around … Happy anniversary!”

Alongside the President of the Jury, Spanish film director and screenwriter Pedro Almodóvar, this year the Jury members include German film director Maren Ade, American actress Jessica Chastain, American actor Will Smith, Chinese actress Fan Bingbing, Italian film director Paolo Sorrentino, French actress and film director Agnès Jaoui, South Korean film director Park Chan-wook and French-Lebanese composer Gabriel Yared.

American actress Uma Thurman is the President for Un Certain Regard. The Un Certain Regard Jury will award its prizes to the winners, chosen from its selection of 18 films, during the Closing Ceremony on Saturday, May 27th in the Debussy Theatre. The opening film is “Barbara”, directed by Mathieu Amalric (France).

Romanian film director Cristian Mungiu is the President for Cinéfondation and short films, while French actress Sandrine Kiberlain is the President for Caméra d’or.

During the International Critics’ Week, Brazilian film director Kleber Mendonça Filho will be the President.
