For many people all over the world, spring is the most wonderful time of the year.
The beauty of the cherry blossoms is something that keeps us amazed each spring. The beautiful cherry blossoms stand as the symbolic flower of spring.
The delicate pink sakura, or cherry blossom, is associated primarily with the culture of its native Japan, where the blossoming of the sakura begins in April. During this season, rows of cherry trees with their pastel-pink crowns transform the country and shower the streets in falling petals.
The cherry blossom is tied to the ancient Japanese tradition of hanami, or picnicking under a sakura tree. The fact that the cherry blossom has heavily featured in ancient Japanese art has made it a staple of both historical and modern Japanese aesthetic.
Although it is also native to China and Korea, it is generally associated primarily with Japanese culture, which is why it often accompanies the Japanese diaspora into cities around the world.
A cherry blossom is the flower of any of several trees of genus Prunus, particularly the Japanese cherry, Prunus serrulata, which is called sakura after the Japanese (桜 or 櫻; さくら).
People go out to gardens, streets and parks for hanami (花見), or flower viewing, to appreciate the beauty of the cherry blossoms and the mild weather after the long, cold winter. Often, hanami involves picnicking in the best sakura locations and enjoying food and drinks with friends under cherry trees.
Another interesting fact is that Japanese have a television forecast for cherry blossom season, provided by the country’s Meteorological Agency. The blossom moves north in a “sakura zensen”, or cherry blossom front, and its progress is keenly tracked.
