The seventh day of the 69th edition of the International Film Festival of Cannes started with more photocalls, screenings, premieres for the movies “Aquarius” by Kleber Mendonça Filho, ” Voyage à travers le cinéma français” by B. Tavernier, “Personal Shopper” by Olivier Assayas, “Voir du pays” (The Stopover) by Delphine & Muriel Coulin. “La Forêt de Quinconces” by Grégoire Leprince Ringuet, “Captain Fantastic” by Matt Ross, “Midnight Returns” by Sally Sussman and “Julieta” by Pedro Almodóvar.
The legendary Spanish director Pedro Almodovar is back in Cannes. This acclaimed Oscar-winning filmmaker has never made a movie in English language but that did not stop American actress Meryl Streep of playing the lead role in his new movie. The movie “Julieta” was inspired by three of Alice Munro’s short stories, and Streep plays the leading character in her older years.
Almodovar stated for Vanity Fair:
“I mean, once you have Meryl Streep, you have to take advantage of that fact. She deserves to be a playing the three characters. With her, I wanted to make something Ingmar Bergman-like being Meryl. We know she can do every accent, and I think she can act every age too. So it would be Streep, looking the same for each age of the character. It takes an artistic license as a storyteller, where you could get the viewer of the movie to understand that this person is playing three different ages . . . Meryl Streep is an extraordinary instrument and I love to direct great actresses. They demand much more of you because with them you can do much more with a film than you can do usually.”
