The 88th Annual Academy Awards, 2016 Oscars

Tonight is the most exciting and important night in Hollywood, as 88th Academy Awards ceremony was held tonight at the Dolby Theatre in Hollywood, Los Angeles (28th February, 2016).

During the ceremony, the Academy of Motion Picture Arts and Sciences presented Academy Awards in 24 categories (commonly referred to as Oscars). As always the Oscars’ 2016 ceremony is considered to be the biggest event of the year in the entertainment world. Actor Chris Rock hosted the show for the second time, having previously hosted the 77th ceremony held in 2005.

Shortly after the nominations were announced, many media outlets observed a lack of diversity among the nominees in major categories for the second year running. Concerning the issue, Academy President Cheryl Boone Isaacs stated: “Of course I am disappointed, but this is not to take away the greatness (of the films nominated). This has been a great year in film…However, we are not stopping…We are moving forward and will continue to move forward with conversation and action. That needs to happen not just within the Academy, but the entire motion picture industry.

During tonight`s show, including several past Oscar winners and nominees, the presenters were – J.J. Abrams, Patricia Arquette, Cate Blanchett, Emily Blunt, Henry Cavill, Priyanka Chopra, Louis C.K., Sacha Baron Cohen, Common, Russell Crowe, Benicio Del Toro, Chris Evans, Tina Fey, Morgan Freeman, Jennifer Garner, Whoopi Goldberg, Ryan Gosling, Kevin Hart, Lady Gaga, Quincy Jones, Byung-hun Lee, John Legend, Jared Leto, Rachel McAdams, Julianne Moore, Olivia Munn, Dev Patel, Eddie Redmayne, Margot Robbie, Jason Segel, Sarah Silverman, J.K. Simmons, Charlize Theron, Sofia Vergara, Kerry Washington, The Weeknd, Pharrell Williams and Reese Witherspoon.

Leonardo DiCaprio was among the lucky winners of the night! The 41-year-old actor won Best Actor for “The Revenant”, his first-ever Oscar after being nominated fix times before. Among the movies, American actress Brie Larson took home the Award for Best Actress for her work in the movie “Room”. 

Swedish actress Alicia Vikander won Best Supporting “Actress for The Danish Girl”, while Mark Rylance won Best Supporting Actor for “Bridge Of Spies”.

Mexican director Alejandro G. Inarritu won Best Director for the second year in a row for “The Revenant. The big winner of the night was “Mad Max: Fury Road”, which won six awards all in the technical categories. “Spotlight” was the winner of Best Picture and it also picked up the award for Best Original Screenplay.

Sam Smith took home Best Original Song Award for Writing’s On The Wall song from the “James Bond: Spectre” movie. “Son Of Saul” received the Awards for Best Foreign Film.
