The 2016 Academy Award nominations have been revealed today. The nominations were announced by actor and producer John Krasinski, Academy president Cheryl Boone Isaacs and directors Ang Lee and director Guillermo del Toro. American actor and comedian Chris Rock will be hosting the 88th annual Academy Awards show, which will be held on Sunday (February 28).
This year there is less more diversity in the list of nominees.
“The Revenant,” directed by Alejandro G. Iñárritu leads the race with 12 nominations and “Mad Max: Fury Road” is following with 10 nominations. Both films are nominated for best picture, along with “The Big Short”, “Bridge of Spies”, “Brooklyn”, “The Martian” and “Room and Spotlight”.
Sylvester Stallone, 39 years after his acting nomination for “Rocky,” was nominated again and this time for the movie “Creed,” in which he plays the same character, Rocky Balboa.
Australian screen siren Cate Blanchett came away with her sixth best actress nomination for “Carol.” American actress Jennifer Lawrence, now a four-time nominee, this time for “Joy,” joined Ms. Blanchett in the category.
First-time Oscar nominee Lady Gaga was nominated in the Best Song category for “Til It Happens To You” from The Hunting Ground, which she wrote with Diane Warren.
