The 67th British Academy Film Awards or popularly known as BAFTAs were held tonight (16th February 2014) at the Royal Opera House in London. The ceremony was broadcasted live on BBC One in the United Kingdom, and the ceremony was hosted by Stephen Fry for the ninth time. Nominees were announced 8 January 2014 by Luke Evans and Helen McCrory. The British-American film “Gravity” received the most nominations with eleven, and its director Alfonso Cuarón received the most nominations with five: Best Film, Best British Film, Best Director, Best Original Screenplay, and Best Editing.
The winner of the night were movies “Gravity” and the drama “12 Years a Slave”, two of them scooped the awards. “Gravity” won six awards at Royal Opera House, including best director and best British film, while “12 Years a Slave” won the awards for Best Film and actor Chiwetel Ejiofor named as Best Actor. Director Steve McQueen while accepting the best film award for “12 Years a Slave” stated: “There are 21 million people in slavery now as we sit here. I just hope that 150 years from now our ambivalence will not allow another film-maker to make this film.”
