According to the US Census Bureau, the generation known as ‘millennials’ includes anyone born between the years 1982-2000.

Millennials today range in age from 18-36, and this generation is expected to surpass the Baby Boomers by the end of this year, making them the largest living generational group. So, what does the generation that grew up during the digital revolution and entered the workforce right at the heart of the Great Recession like to drive? Many members of this generation are still driving a car owned by their parents or another family member, but according to the data, the most preferred car types for millennials include:

Hybrid and Electric Cars
Millennials tend to be more concerned about living a greener lifestyle these days – and with electric cars like the Nissan Leaf increasing in popularity while decreasing in price, they are quickly becoming more in reach for every kind of driver. Electric cars are appealing to millennials because they are modern and tend to have a lot of driving features that enhance the experience behind the wheel, like built-in sat-nav capabilities and Bluetooth connectivity too. And, in the long run, electric and hybrid cars can be cheaper since there’s no – or limited – need to fill up the tank with gas.

Pickup Trucks
Pickup trucks remain a popular type of car amongst millennials thanks to their space and convenience. In 2017, a Ford pickup was the top-selling vehicle in the US, and it’s easy to see why. These vehicles are often a strong choice and are appealing on the eye, too. In addition, millennials often find them a great choice of vehicle due to the storage capabilities which simply can’t be achieved with a hatchback or sedan.

Hatchbacks and City Cars
For millennials living and working in urban areas, quick, small cars designed to cope well with the demands of a busy city lifestyle are the ideal choice. City cars are becoming increasingly popular and thanks to their cheap insurance premiums and small engines, are often an ideal choice of first car for younger millennials just hitting the road, too.

Trusted Brands
Statistics show that millennials prefer to drive a brand that they know or trust. Often growing up driving their parents’ car, it’s not uncommon for millennials to stick to the makes and models that they are used to when it comes to getting their own vehicles. Do you fit into the millennial age range? What car are you currently driving? What would your dream car be? We’d love to hear from you in the comments.
