Making the most of your small bedroom

When it comes to designing and styling a small bedroom, there are various tips and tricks you can follow to ensure you make the most of your space.

Just because you aren’t working with a large area doesn’t mean you can’t get creative and design a beautiful room! It might seem like your options are limited at first, but you just need to pre-plan and select the best furniture and colours to complement the bedroom and you might be surprised by the results.

Here are a few pointers to get you started…

Making the most of your small bedroom

Allow plenty of light
This is an important starting point and absolutely key if you want to maximise your space. Avoid moody hues, and instead, opt for bright white or neutral toned walls and make sure nothing is blocking the natural light from flooding in. Choose Roman style blinds and long curtains that drape from the ceiling to the floor, this tricks the eye and creates the illusion of space by encouraging the eye to look up. You want to create a light and airy space which feels comfortable – not cramped! Natural lighting also encourages us to be more productive and happier!

Say no to clutter
When you’re working with limited space, the clutter simply has to go! If you have crowded shelves, a messy floor, and boxes everywhere, this will make the room feel claustrophobic. Ask yourself, do you really need that magazine collection from 2007 and those DVD’s that have been collecting dust since the arrival of Netflix? You’ll need to be ruthless and either
send your items to the loft, or to a car boot sale. Not only will clearing the clutter create extra room, it will make for a more comfortable living space.

Pick space saving furniture
A divan bed is a great functional investment for your small bedroom, as not only do they look great, they’re also perfect for housing your belongings. The storage base acts as a fantastic space saving tool, keeping clutter tucked out of sight and out of mind. The drawers are surprisingly spacious and you might just be surprised at how many items you can
squeeze in there. Visit the specialists at Divan Beds Centre for a range of sizes and designs to suit your small bedroom.

Add a touch of green
If you’re going with a white theme in the room with your walls and bedding, then adding a splash of green with a few house plants will complete the look and stop the room from looking clinical. You may be wondering why you’ve just thrown out 27 DVD’s if you’re just going to replace your clutter with plants, but there are a few ways in which you can bring the outdoors in without taking up any space. Hanging plant pots are in-fashion right now and can be a great way to introduce foliage without taking up any ground space. Plant shelves are another idea
and can really bring a room to life!

Invest in a full-length mirror
If you don’t already own a full-length mirror, then you may want to consider purchasing one for the bedroom. Mirrors can maximise your space by creating the illusion of a bigger room. Position your mirror to reflect the light coming from the window to increase the natural
light.
