American model Jasmine Tookes was given the honor of wearing the new Fantasy Bra at the following Victoria’s Secret 2016 fashion show in Paris.
The 25-year-old Victoria’s Secret Angel will join the ranks of Victoria’s Secret stars Adriana Lima, Alessandra Ambrosio and Candice Swanepoel in the Bright Night Fantasy Bra designed by Eddie Borgo. Though this will be her fifth year walking the Victoria’s Secret runway, she only ascended to Angel status last year.
The 2016 Bright Night Fantasy Bra: $3 million worth of emeralds, diamonds & more, was designed by Eddie Borgo and hand-crafted by Aziz & Walid Mouzannar.
Tookes wrote on her Instagram, “It blows my mind that I am joining a list of women who I have looked up to my whole life, and it is truly an honor to follow in their footsteps.” She continued, “It is also a milestone for Victoria’s Secret to have a woman of color wearing the bra this year because there have only been two in the past, and I am so happy to represent that for the brand and women out there. I hope that I can be as much of an inspiration to young girls as these girls were for me.”
The designer Borgo and his team spent a total of seven months on the project, including 700 hours alone to hand sew the gems. The garment features 9,000 precious AWMouzannar jewels—including 450 carats of diamonds and emeralds that are set in 18-karat gold—valuing the bra at over $3 million.
“I had never worked with traditional emeralds before, and, due to their fragility, they are not used often today,” Borgo told Vogue.
Borgo’s first step was to virtually scan Tookes’ body and create a plaster mold over it—an elaborate process that took three hours. To design the bra, he incorporated his personal style with the brand’s aesthetic.
“It was important to the Victoria’s Secret Fashion Show collection team that the design represented some of the different iconography, shapes, and techniques that we use consistently within my namesake collection,” Borgo said.
