Today we’ve teamed up with Trendhim to talk you through choosing an essential men’s accessory – the earring. Earrings for men have made a comeback in recent years and they are now a staple of any fashionable man’s wardrobe.
Shape and size The first thing to decide is whether you want a stud or a hoop earring. A stud earring is the best option for beginners, or for those whose style is more understated, as it is contained on the earlobe and is not extremely eye-catching. Studs come in a variety of shapes, but the most common is circular.
Hoops are a little more of an adventurous choice and you should only really choose one if it’s in keeping with your personal style and the hoop is of a small size.
Men’s earrings are usually seen in 4, 6 and 8mm sizes. Earrings with a diameter of 10mm and up are usually worn as plug earrings designed to stretch out the earlobe.
The size earring you choose depends on your personal style preference but you should also consider the size and shape of your face and body. If you have a round face it would be better to go for a square shaped earring and vice versa. Also, if you are a man with a skinny frame then oversized earrings probably won’t look as good as a smaller size would.
Material The majority of earrings, both studs and hoops, are seen in different metallic varieties. The most common type of metal to use is stainless steel and sometimes sterling silver.
The main thing to be aware of when it comes to the material is the nickel content. If you are buying earrings within the EU then they should adhere to EU law about the amount of nickel present within metal earrings, but be aware that these rules don’t apply if you’re buying from a non-EU site or shop.
If you know you’re allergic to nickel, then to be on the safe side you might want to get a wooden or plastic variety of earring instead. Acrylic plastic earrings are really comfortable to wear as they are lightweight so they don’t feel heavy on your ears.
