Cannes Film Festival 2016 (Day 1) – Opening Ceremony

The world’s most important and most glamorous film festival opened today in Cannes on the French Riviera as the 69th edition of the International Film Festival of Cannes returned and it will end on 22nd May. This year there are 21 films competing for its top prize, the Palme d’Or.

This year`s edition will be presided by the Australian director, screenwriter and producer, George Miller. The Jury will therefore include four women and four men around George Miller: Arnaud Desplechin, Kirsten Dunst, Valeria Golino, Mads Mikkelsen, László Nemes, Vanessa Paradis, Katayoon Shahabi and Donald Sutherland. The official poster was designed using stills from Jean-Luc Godard‘s film Contempt.

As always the red carpet will be the place where our favorite movie stars sizzle and this year Julia Roberts, Charlize Theron, Juliette Binoche, Marion Cotillard and Javier Bardem will be hitting the red carpet. Woody Allen’s newest movie, Café Society, is the opening night film, and Clooney and Roberts’ thriller Money Monster, directed by Jodie Foster, premieres May 12.

Mexico is set to have a high profile at this year’s Cannes Film Festival with the participation of Mexican films, actors and judges. Also Mexican actor and director Diego Luna has been selected to serve on the jury of the festival’s Un Certain Regard competition, which is designed to promote young talent and unique cinematic styles.
